Digital dentistry at VCU

Digital Dentistry

Technology and innovation are at the forefront of our education programs and patient care. Dentistry is quickly evolving toward digital technologies that improve clinical outcomes and the patient experience. Students and residents regularly utilize intra-oral scanners, cone beam computed tomography, 3D printers, milling machines, and design software that allows for data acquisition, prosthetic design, and on-site manufacturing of dental restorations.

VCU Dental Laboratory

VCU School of Dentistry is unique in having a state-of-the-art digital dentistry laboratory in-house. Our students and residents regularly collaborate with VCU dental technicians to produce exceptional dental restorations for the predoctoral and graduate clinics.

The VCU Dental Lab utilizes a wide variety of advanced computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technologies to design and fabricate highly detailed and custom restorations that are precisely tailored to fit each individual patient.

Same-day dentistry

Within the predoctoral student clinic, VCU School of Dentistry has is a specialized “CADCAM Clinic” dedicated to providing patients with same-day dentistry. This specialized team works closely with the VCU Dental Lab to condense dental procedures that would historically take weeks, into just hours.  This reduces the number of patient appointments and the risk of complications during treatment.
